STP Shipyard Palma makes further headway towards more energy-efficient model for yachting industry

Renewable energy generation is a cornerstone of STP Shipyard Palma's sustainability strategy. Over recent years, the yard has rolled out a series of initiatives to increase on-site renewable energy generation, paving the way for a more efficient and sustainable energy model.

This journey began in 2021 with the commissioning of the first solar installation, meaning part of the electricity demand of the yachts, businesses and facilities at STP Shipyard Palma could be met through renewable energy. The company has since steadily expanded its on-site renewable energy capacity through additional solar installations across the site.

Key milestones include the solar installation on the Espigón Consigna building, as well as the introduction of electric vehicle charging stations powered by renewable energy. The yard later took another significant step forward with the commissioning of a solar array mounted on its carports, alongside the introduction of battery energy storage systems to maximise the use of the renewable energy generated.

The very latest addition is a self-sufficient solar installation on the roof of the new changing facilities and public toilets developed as part of the yard's expansion and upgrade programme. Thanks to this latest installation, STP Shipyard Palma has further expanded its on-site renewable energy generation capacity, building on a long-term strategy that has so far prevented the release of 587 tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere.

Collectively, these initiatives are part of a wider strategy to reduce the environmental impact of the yard's operations, boost energy efficiency by supplying additional power during periods of peak demand and support a more sustainable operating model. This approach is complemented by a range of measures focused on lowering emissions, fostering responsible waste management, protecting the marine environment and encouraging environmental best practices among employees, partner companies and users.

According to STP engineer Enrique Galiano, "the gradual rollout of the solar installations is part of a long-term strategy to improve the energy efficiency of our facilities and move towards a more sustainable operating model. Each new project helps us optimise resources, reduce our environmental impact and prepare STP for the challenges of the future".

This latest project further develops STP Shipyard Palma's renewable energy strategy, bringing together solutions that improve the efficiency of its facilities while underpinning its sustainability and innovation objectives within the yachting industry.
